Taormina - Greek Theatre

The Greek Theatre as it currently stands shows significant Roman alterations. The view of the coast and Mount Etna as seen in the first picture above was unobstructed in the original theatre. The Romans constructed the brick wall that blocks most of that view. They also removed the lower seating section and used the theatre for gladiator matches. Today the theatre is still used, with modern seating installed near the stage and at the top, as seen in the other two pictures.

The above three pictures show the view at various locations of the theatre. The first two show the coastline as seen from the rear of the theatre. The last two show views of the town of Taormina and the overlooking mountains.
