The island of Ortigia is one of the oldest parts of Siracusa. Even today the Southern portion of the island is occupied by the military and therefore is off limits to tourists. Above are the post office, the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, a fountain, the ancient spring, and a boat at the docks, near where we got a boat tour.

The above cathedral was built around the Temple of Athena. Like the Temple of Concordia in Agrigento, it was converted into a Christian basilica. The conversion continued however, and included the Baroque facade. The original columns can be seen in the third picture above.
